If you love going to the Fair, you must love the food. But there’s only two problmes; the Fair is only around during the month of October, and the food is really expensive.
Brad Priebe opened The Stand, a casual dining restaurant on McKinney Avenue, where he serves stadium and Fair food with flair, and for more afordable prices.
The Stand in Uptown is turning your concession stand favorites into comfort food with a fun twist.
“We wanted to do a place that was comfort foods done fun with different twists on it. All of our menu items are a little bit off the norm. We’ve taken the traditional fun foods that you might see at concession stands, at stadiums, at the fair and done a different twist on it using the highest quality ingredients to make it a more memorable dining experience,” said owner Adam Alfia.
One of those options, the Big Cheese Grilled Cheese Sandwich, looks so gourmet you’d never think it was a riff off comforting fair food.
There’s also the Mac Daddy Dog — a hot dog topped with macaroni and cheese, chili and a jumbo onion ring.
The Stand recently opened at 2916 McKinney, just where the street splits to one-way traffic. The name is a reference to a burger or hotdog “stand,” and inside two Airstream trailers serve as such. The patio that wraps around the front of the restaurant could be a cool spot to hang on a nice day.
The menu is a field-guide to the glorious and gluttonous side of American junk food, and the Mac Daddy Dog (photo above) just might be the defining item. It starts with a Jumbo Nathan’s dog wrapped in bacon, lightly fried with mac n’ cheese, topped with chili, cheese and two Tearjerker onion rings all served on a hoagie bun ($5.50).
The first thing you’ll notice when you walk in to The Stand on McKinney Ave are the two halves of an airstream. It makes you think of the concession stands at school sporting events. The Stand takes your favorite concession stand food and turns it on its head.
